Week 3 Robotics+Arts

From the previous weeks' lectures, I noticed that art is always leading by development of science. As I thought that would be a universal concept, I find out that this week's concept of robotics and arts is an exception. It is that artistic characteristic of art that leaded robotics to change and make improvement.
The story between robotics and art should start from the very early years when printing press was invented by Chinese. From what I learn in middle school history text book, the very first printing press are segregative by characters. That way does make it easier to composing, but it is hard to line up every single character. Therefore, the lack of artistic has driven it to make improvement from segregative characters to a continuous way.

As we have been told from the lecture, japanese has a great robotic culture. The famous comic character 'atom' is the symbol of japanese robotics. Robotics actually does not looks like human at the very beginning. Later on, some people have the idea of adding a face to robotics. Since then, people find out that robots should have a happy faee rather than a cruel one since the beauty of the face makes people like it.

From the movie Transformers, we would notice that those robots are not only designed to be powerful but also graceful. They are composed of luxury cars and they looks muscular and strong after they transformed. Apparently, robotics culture is following the trace of art to improve its influence.

  1. Firstly, I'd like to note that your images are great. I love the characters and the robotic girl is quite eerily pretty.

That being said, I cannot agree that science "leads" art.

Rather, I see art as a reaction to science. If one force acts, the other reacts. Often, art critics science, in its ethics, its morals, its practicability, and even its existence. Duchamp's Fountain consists of a photo a toilet, protesting all sorts of rationality.

But less politically, art cannot lead science because science requires art to flourish. When fire was first created, it was a scientific process that did so, causing the chemical reactions to create heat and sparks. However, it is the artistic process of storytelling, of oral transmission, of the want to preserve beauty, that allowed fire to live to the point when we could understand the science that caused it.

  2. First of all, I agree with your claim that art help robotics to improve.
I watch a drama from Japan a few years ago. It was about a woman fell in love with a handsome and kind man robot. Although this man robot has no human feeling, he helped the woman through a rough time in her life. If you are interested, you can watch the drama. It is call "my boyfriend is a robot."

  3. I am very interested in the printing techniques that you bring up here. As the earliest type of printing press, Chinese printing has been used for more than a thousand years. The technique is also a symbol of mass production and robotics maybe. Not only Chinese people use the technique to pass knowledge from generations to generations, but also they designed different fonts and different types of print. I would say the books that has used the printing and the printing blocks themselves have become pieces of arts, too.

  4. As much as I agree with your point that humans help development of robot and the technology required, I would like to underscore the fact that the robots are continued to be humanized. By humanized, I mean both in their physical, exterior properties and internal character of the robot. As you mentioned not only the appearance of robot resembles that of human, like Atom, but also the virtue and emotion of human are implanted in robots; robots are becoming more graceful and more human-friendly.
